President Joe Biden grinned and chuckled when asked about potential audio tapes of him accepting a bribe as vice president. The allegation, which was first reported by the New York Post, stems from an FBI informant file that accuses Biden of receiving $5 million from the owner of Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings.
Biden has denied the allegation, calling it “a bunch of malarkey.” However, the allegation has resurfaced in recent days after a whistleblower contacted Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who then told House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.).
Comer has called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate the allegation. However, Garland has not yet responded to Comer’s request.
The allegation has also drawn comparisons to the impeachment inquiry into former President Donald Trump, who was accused of pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden. Trump was acquitted by the Senate, but the impeachment inquiry led to a number of investigations into his business dealings.
It remains to be seen whether the allegation against Biden will lead to any further investigations. However, the allegation has raised questions about Biden’s potential conflicts of interest while he was vice president.
