A Republican-led effort to censure Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff failed in a key House vote on Wednesday. The House voted 225-196 to table the resolution, which would have rebuked Schiff for his role in the impeachment inquiry into former President Donald Trump.
The resolution was introduced by Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who accused Schiff of misleading the public about the intelligence that led to the impeachment inquiry. Jordan also accused Schiff of abusing his power as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.
Schiff denied the allegations, calling them “false and misleading.” He said that he had acted in good faith and that the impeachment inquiry was justified.
The vote to table the resolution was largely along party lines, with all but two Democrats voting against the resolution and all but two Republicans voting in favor.
The failure of the censure resolution is a setback for Republicans, who had hoped to use it to damage Schiff’s reputation and political standing. However, the vote also shows that there is little support for censure among Democrats, who control the House.
The censure resolution was the latest in a series of attacks by Republicans on Schiff. In the past, Republicans have accused Schiff of leaking classified information, of exaggerating the threat posed by Russia, and of being biased against Trump.
